How to prepare for CLAT 2023 in 5 months?
The first thing to keep in mind is that the CLAT 2023 will be held on 18th December 2022 and you have just enough time for your preparation. It is the time to pull up your socks and grind until you get there.
Study Material
I personally used three books which are mentioned below.
1. Self Study Guide for CLAT by Arihant Publications
2. Legal Awareness & Legal Reasoning by AP Bhardwaj
3. Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension for CAT by Arun Sharma & Meenakshi Upadhyay
Apart from these books, I referred Vision IAS's monthly current affairs magazine and 'The Hindu' or 'The Indian Express' newspaper.
The most important part of my preparation was the Legal Edge Mocks. I solved a lot of them and they helped me immeasurably. Many students prefer Career Launcher Mocks too but I never used them.
Section-wise Strategy
1. English Section
The most beneficial section for you would be the English section as while preparing for it, you will automatically prepare for other sections. It will definitely help you in other sections as well and your excellent command of the English language is a prerequisite, which otherwise you can develop over time.
The first step would be to read the newspaper daily, The Hindu is preferred. The primary objective of reading a newspaper would be for current affairs but it will eventually help you a lot in the English section.
In addition, I read all the lessons in my English NCERT textbook and supplementary reader which not only increased my reading speed but also prepared me for my CBSE exams. The lessons of the supplementary reader are a must because they are very very lengthy and reading that will make you bear reading a full-page passage in CLAT for 5 questions in less time and with more accuracy.
Moreover, you have to solve hundreds of RCs throughout your preparation. My sources of RCs were online websites and mocks of Legal Edge.
2. Legal Reasoning
The most common mistake students do that causes blunder is not reading the given passage patiently. You have to be quick but especially in the Legal section, you have to be cautious too. If you understand the passage correctly, you will do all questions correctly. Try to get the gist of the passage. Read the question carefully and take just appropriate time to think over it.
You have to be familiar with the Legal language first. You can do so by reading a newspaper. I personally read Law of Torts and Law of Contracts from the Arihant book I mentioned and I read the Indian Constitution from AP Bhardwaj. The Arihant book also contains some useful things in its Legal section such as Legal Maxims, and Terms to Remember. I would recommend you read the Arihant book extensively.
Pro tip: If you do not get what the passage is saying, please don't do wild guessing and leave that question to avoid negative marking.
3. Current Affairs & GK
This particular section of CLAT has become so uncertain that no one can predict the level of preparation required for CLAT'23. CA of 2020 was very tough and the same of 2021 was way too easy and the same of 2022 was again on the difficult side.
So, I would suggest you follow Vision IAS's monthly CA magazine and daily reading of The Hindu and for revision, you may refer to Legal Edge's CA as it compiles important topics in short.
One thing that I realized is that giving too much time to this section's preparation is not worth it because of its uncertainty and giving that time to other sections will improve your score. Giving 1 to a maximum of 2 hours a day is alright.
4. Logical Reasoning
It is the section that can increase your score substantially but students are unnecessarily scared of this section. It is not that tough and lengthy and has great potential.
I used The Verbal Ability & RC book I mentioned above and this book is such a gem that you will be able to solve questions with so much ease.
I will definitely suggest you put the effort into this section as it has a good number of questions and is comparatively easy.
5. Quantitative Techniques
This is the section that most of the students ignore and I did the same. It is just so time-consuming and the number of questions is also comparatively less. You might be surprised to know that despite me being a Science (PCM+CS) student, I did not attempt a single question from this section, and my fellow mates who attempted this section regret it till today because it takes much more time than you would think and its weird data interpretation and percentage and ratio which need time to be solved.
I was able to two passages (~10 questions) of other sections in the time that I needed to solve one passage (~5 questions) of this section.
Generally, toppers attempt this section to boost their rank who have surplus time left and have thoroughly attempted other sections.
I hope you find this blog useful.
